Vols Practice Report: Day Two

Vols Practice Report: Day Two
Nick Davis

The Tennessee Vols returned to the practice field and underwent the second day of fall camp Sunday at the Anderson Training Complex. The media was allowed the first five periods again. Here are a few observations:

Quarterbacks/Receivers

I spent most of the time with the quarterbacks. QB coach Mike Canales once again displayed his energy and was wanting to get the most out of his guys. Dormady and Guarantano both looked solid again today during passing drills, throwing tight and accurate balls. It seems the 7-on-7s have been beneficial because it looked like the majority of the receivers and QBs were on the same page. Things just seemed to have been flowing pretty smoothly. Dormady is leading the group as expected, but Guarantano remains very vocal.

Some of the guys that stood out to me today were the top options: Jauan Jennings, Marquez Callaway, Tyler Byrd and Latrell Williams. Even veteran Josh Smith showed some nice versatility, which was good to see since he’s been injury prone for the last three years. Freshman Jacquez Jones also showed a lot of speed and could be a good slot option in the future. Butch Jones and WR coach Kevin Beard drew their praises quite a bit today.

Defensive/Offensive Line

I didn’t get to watch much of these groups, but I did get to catch a glimpse of some DL/OL one-on-one battles as we were heading back inside. Jonathan Kongbo got the best of Marcus Tatum. Trey Smith held his own against Alexis Johnson and drew praise from Walt Wells. The most impressive rep came as Khalil McKenzie tossed Venzell Boulware to the ground consecutive times. There are a lot of questions surrounding that unit, so the defensive linemen need to continue having quality reps like I saw today.

Overall, there seemed to be a lot of energy throughout practice and hopefully that can continue on into the season. The Vols will take tomorrow off and come back out Tuesday evening.
