Tennessee Flies Together For Its 18th Straight Win

No. 1 Tennessee got off to an interesting start as the sellout crowd at Thompson-Boling Arena rose to their feet for a few minutes, before the Vols finally knocked down their first shot of the day. On Saturday afternoon in which Tennessee was without Yves Pons coming off the bench, especially on the defensive end, out with a facial fracture, Tennessee stood for its teammate and fed off a raucous crowd.

In a game in which there was never a point Tennessee fans seemed to worry — except when Jordan Bone came out of the game to workout an apparent twisted ankle for a few minutes — the players shook off any kind of run the Gators were trying to establish. The Vols continue to roll and the fans know it. For the fourth consecutive week, the country will see it when the highlights run on every show tonight and tomorrow.

Grant Williams led Tennessee with 16 points and six rebounds in a game in which he was battling down low on every single possession. The Vols came out in the second half with a six-point lead that was extended to double digits before the first TV break of the half.

Admiral Schofield had another big game with 14 points and six rebounds, and jolted the crowd with a monster baseline dunk midway through the second half that brought the TBA crowd to a whole new level of loud. During this stretch of the game, Tennessee took a commanding lead and never looked back.

The Vols are riding high with their 18th straight win, though you wouldn’t be able to tell, especially with how composed this team stays within tough situations. The Vols held Florida to 35 percent shooting from the field during the game, but the Gators out-rebounded Tennessee 33-31 on the day.

I don’t think we have seen the Vols’ best game of the year, and that should scare a lot of teams. Tennessee can still improve on the defensive end and especially the transition defense, but they are definitely the No. 1 team in the country for a reason. The 18th straight team figured that out this afternoon. For Tennessee, they want to make that 19 versus South Carolina before a huge match-up with Kentucky looms next Saturday.

One game at a time, it seems they are all flying together.
