The Tennessee Volunteers baseball team will be making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2005, after the field of 64 teams was unveiled on Monday.

The Vols (38-19, 14-16 SEC) were selected as the No. 2 seed in the Chapel Hill regional, which will be hosted by No. 14 national seed North Carolina (42-17, 17-13 ACC), the winners of the ACC Tournament.

Tennessee will first play No. 3 seed Liberty (42-19, 15-9 ASUN), the champions of the Atlantic Sun Tournament on Friday at 7 p.m. ET. This will be a rematch from Feb. 26, where the Vols defeated the Flames 7-1 in Knoxville. Regional hosts UNC will play UNC-Wilmington (32-29, 12-12 CAA), who earned an automatic tournament bid after winning the CAA Tournament.

This will be Tennessee’s 10th overall NCAA Tournament appearance. The BaseVols or Voltellos (if you prefer) will be looking to make a deep run in the postseason to build upon a very successful year two under head coach Tony Vitello.

Thus far in 2019, Tennessee baseball has accomplished the following:

Tennessee has fared well in a loaded SEC, which captured 10 bids in the NCAA Tournament, the most of any conference and two bids ahead of the ACC. Now, the Vols will look to further surprise the country by attempting to make the College World Series for the fifth time in school history and the first time since 2005.

Names to Know

Alerick “Al” Soularie – The former JUCO product from San Jacinto C.C. has made an impressive debut in his first season as a Vol. The Houston native was one of the most consistent hitters in the SEC and was honored with an All-SEC First Team selection at the conclusion of the regular season.

His .359 BA is good for second the SEC behind Austin Martin of Vanderbilt.

Garrett Stallings – The right-handed Vol ace has shown steady improvement throughout his college career and he has been recognized for it in his junior campaign this season. Stallings was named SEC Pitcher of the Week (4/15) after a CG shutout against then No. 2 Georgia on April 12. He was again named PoW (5/20) after a CG 7K/4H win over No. 15 Ole Miss on May 16.

Stallings has an 8-4 record in 15 starts, racking up 103 strikeouts in 97.1 IP. He is currently rated as the No. 119 overall 2019 MLB Draft prospect by D1 Baseball. He was also named the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for his performance in the classroom.

Andre Lipcius – While Soulaire is the most consistent hitter for the Vols, Lipcius will be the one bringing the power at the plate.

The junior from Virginia has had a career year, slashing .311/.407/.598. Lipcius leads the team in homers on the year with 16, after hitting eight combined home runs his previous two seasons.

The Road Begins

Those three names are just a few of the key players for the Vols this postseason. This is the best team to take the diamond at UT in almost 15 years and they should be appreciated and paid attention to, perhaps before the rest of the country does as summer begins.

The road to Omaha starts now.
