Tennessee Lands Commitment From Top In-State Prospect Keon Johnson

It’s been a back-and-forth summer for Rick Barnes and Tennessee basketball, but the Vols received some good news on Tuesday night when in-state guard Keon Johnson pledged his commitment.

Johnson is a 6-5, 180-pound shooting guard from Bell Buckle, Tenn. He’s rated as a consensus four-star. On 247Sports, he is ranked as the No. 27 overall player, No. 6 shooting guard and No. 1 player in the state in the class of 2020.

This commitment is important for Barnes and his staff. Tennessee has had bad luck trying to get the top-ranked guy in the state for a number of years, as the last time was when Robert Hubbs III committed to the Vols in the class of 2013.

Johnson has shined at The Webb School over his last two seasons. During his sophomore campaign, he averaged 25.6 PPG, 10.2 RPG, and 4.1 APG. This past season, Johnson averaged 24.6 PPG, 8.6 RPG, and 3.2 APG. He scored 30 or more points in 11 separate games. Johnson has really impressed scouts over the last two seasons at the NBPA Top 100 camps. He also shined in AAU ball this summer for EAB Tennessee.

Johnson joins Corey Walker as the second commit of the 2020 class for Tennessee. Walker is 6-6 small forward ranked No. 34 nationally. With those two commitments, Tennessee is now sitting at No. 5 overall in the 2020 class, just behind Virginia, Houston, Duke, and Kentucky.

The Vols are still not done on the recruiting trail, as they are in the running for two other Top-100 players. Jaden Springer is a five-star shooting guard and is ranked as the No. 11 overall player in the 2020 class and has the Vols in his top five. Tennessee is also in the running for 6-8 power forward P.J. Hall, who is ranked as the 65th best player.

If the Vols are able to secure a commitment from either Hall or Springer, the 2020 class will be the best basketball recruiting class to come through Tennessee.
