Walter Football is one of the go-to authorities when it comes to the NFL Draft.
He did not hold his feelings back when giving the Carolina Panthers a grade of “A” for selecting Rashaan Gaulden.
Rashaan Gaulden is a very versatile player who should be able to help the Panthers’ atrocious secondary in some regard. I love the idea of picking Tennessee prospects because Butch Jones was such a horrible coach that he didn’t get anything out of his players. Gaulden is a second-round talent.
Butch Jones’ reputation in the NFL cannot be good. The misuse of Alvin Kamara and the whole JJ Watt should play on the offensive line thing have to be conversations frequently had among scouts and GMs alike. On Saturday, Jones’ best recruit, 5-star DT Khalil McKenzie was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the sixth round…to play guard on the offensive line, something that scouts clamored to see during his underwhelming time at Tennessee. For the record, both the John Kelly and the Kahlil McKenzie selection earned a “B” letter grade.
It’s nothing that Tennessee fans didn’t already know. Underdevelopment and stubbornness were two of the main themes of the past five years in Knoxville.
However, if you’re looking for a happy ending, as the Tennessee program added three players to their draft legacy, the current coaching staff’s prowess was on full display during the NFL Draft, most notably the first round.
Sam Darnold, Roquan Smith, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Da’Ron Payne, Derwin James, Rashaan Evans and Isaiah Wynn all had direct ties to Tennessee’s coaching staff and all went in the first round of the NFL Draft.
