Tennessee Vols Practice Report: August 11th

Tennessee Vols Practice Report: August 11th
Nick Davis

The Tennessee Volunteers football team were back on the practice field Friday afternoon as we’re one day closer to kicking off the season September 4th against Georgia Tech.

The media was allowed four periods with no filming or photos in two of them. Here are some of my quick observations.

  • Quinten Dormady had a nice throw on the run and hooked up with Brandon Johnson in the back corner of the endzone during a two-point conversion
  • Brett Kendrick, Marcus Tatum and Trey Smith were back at practice. Smith was in a green, non-contact jersey. Josh Smith was also back.
  • Freshman receiver Jacquez Jones was working as a kick returner
  • The defense was able to shut out the offense after the Dormady-Johnson score in the two-point conversion drill

Other than that, we didn’t get to see a whole lot. I though Jones looked fast and shifty during kickoff returns and will probably be a player to look for in the slot on offense. In seeing some defensive back work, I continue to be impressed with the freshmen safeties Theo Jackson and Maleik Gray. Both have good size already and have shown good athleticism. The coaches seem to be really high, though, on Jackson. Out of high school, Jackson (Overton HS, Nashville) was ranked a three-star prospect and the No. 37 safety in the country and Gray (LaVergne HS) was a four-star and the No. 10 safety. Nigel Warrior is another guy who has really looked to step up in that role and will be looked upon to be an integral part in the secondary this year.

The Vols are set to practice (maybe scrimmage) tomorrow. Media Day is on Sunday at 4 p.m.
