Peyton Manning hired by ESPN… to host the ESPYs

Peyton Manning will host the 2017 ESPY awards on July 12, 2017.

“The ESPYS have been a part of my life during my entire career—I can still remember attending my very first show back in 1998 before my rookie season in the NFL,” Manning said in the official release from ESPN.

Peyton will be a perfect contrast to last year’s host, John Cena, a professional wrestler turned actor who hasn’t exactly mastered the art of comedy when he’s removed from the squared circle. Manning’s at his best when displaying his dry, quick-witted humor. He’s natural in his comedy bits and never seems to be trying too hard, something that the ESPYs sometimes struggles with.

The annual awards show, and ESPN to a larger degree, has been criticized for injecting political issues in their sports coverage. On the other hand, Manning recently gave a speech at a GOP retreat and has been linked to rumors about political aspirations.

Will the clash of leanings create a mutual desire from both parties to “stick to sports” this year?

Either way, I hope we finally get a sequel to SNL’s “United Way” skit. Or an update on whatever happened to him when he moved in with Sandra Bullock.
