Derek Dooley is BACK! Missouri has hired the beautifully haired, orange-panted coach

Watch out, SEC East: Derek Dooley is back and looking to dazzle the sidelines in whatever hideous version of yellow pants Mizzou can give him. After spending five seasons as the receivers coach in Dallas, Dooley is heading to Columbia, Missouri, where he will try to terrorize his former employers, the Tennessee Vols.

Dooley’s Coaching Baggage

Dooley’s hire comes on the heels of former Tiger offensive coordinator Josh Heupel’s departure to UCF, where he will be taking his explosive offensive scheme. Dooley will have to fill some large shoes in his first year. Spending five seasons breaking down professional secondaries won’t hurt Dooley, though his time with the Cowboys was partially spent getting yelled at by the likes of Dez Bryant. In the most prolific instance, Dooley said Dez was just spouting off about how good the Cowboys were at breaking coverages and Romo couldn’t execute.

When coaching the Vols, he racked up an abysmal four SEC wins in three years, losing to his new school Missouri in its inaugural SEC season. Vol fans remember all too well what it was like having Dooley at the helm, as he racked up a 15-21 record in three years and decreasing Tennessee’s win total each season.

Dooley managed to find a quarterback who was decent, at best, in Tyler Bray. In some games, Bray looked like a world-beater, but in others, he looked mediocre. His 103-yard, two interception performance against the Commodores in 2012 was the final nail in Dooley’s coffin.

Check(er) Him Out

Missouri will come roaring into Knoxville on November 17th. Dooley will be the featured coach on the Tigers sideline, despite not being the head coach. He will have running back Larry Rountree III on the field and may have Drew Lock back if he doesn’t declare for the draft. Vol fans will hope that Dooley’s mediocrity spreads over the potent Tigers offense that unloaded on the Vols last season.

Pruitt and company will have their hands full proving that Tennessee is back, but the game against Missouri will be a test to see if we have truly upgraded our program.
